LEHI, Utah – On Sept. 25, students at Eaglecrest Elementary assisted in planting five tree in honor of Mr. Humphreys, a beloved teacher who recently passed away in a hiking accident.
“He came in and he didn’t just tell the kids what to in P.E., he did it with them," fellow teacher Cassy Lewis told local news stations. Humphreys would rotate between all the classes each year, getting to know each child and teaching everyone that being active can be fun. Humphreys also had a passion for the outdoors, which sparked the idea of planting trees at the school in memory of him.

An October Red Maple was planted near the playground in memory of Humphreys. Here all the children at the school can watch the tree grow and enjoy playing in its shade. Four other Sycamores and Honeylocusts were also planted throughout the playing fields to provide more shade for the children and encourage outdoor imaginative play.

Each class took turns participating in the plantings by learning about the importance of trees from Tree Utah educational specialists Arly Landry and Ian Piesner. The students then helped in preparing holes, loosening roots and planting the trees. All were excited to be part of the process and many children could not wait until recess to come back out check on the trees.
