Have you noticed that homes are increasingly both wireless and high tech? More and more home buyers are looking for high tech gadgets and features in their home. Many can be controlled or checked from anywhere with your smartphone.
This includes everything from home security systems to thermostats that can heat and cool your home even when you’re away from home. The thermostat can even alert you if your furnace or AC stops working. If you’re away on vacation or travelling, you can know about a problem and call someone to repair it before you even get home. This can prevent damage to your home and save you money with a lower power bill.

High tech is not just limited to inside your home either, there are high tech garages, locks and other gadgets for your home’s exterior.
5 examples of tech for your home:
- Utah-based Skydrop watering system that monitors weather forecasts and adjusts to conditions (it won’t water your lawn on a rainy day).
- Solor automower that mows your lawn for you, using solar energy. Or you can move into Tuscan Estates, Garden Park in Daybreak, or another one of Ivory Homes’ maintenance-free communities.
- Smartphone-controlled refrigerators that keeps a shopping list, expiration dates and even offer coupons for foods you buy frequently.
- A wifi enabled big screen smart TV for outdoors so you can watch a movie at your next BBQ.
- Smart showers, faucets and toilets.
If you really want a high tech home there is even more, with many systems that can all communicate with each other. We asked Alex Lawrence, a Utah entrepreneur and Vice Provost at Weber State University, what is on his list for the new home he is building.
Here’s what he said:
- Sonos (music)
- Kwikset Kevo (exterior door locks)
- DropCam (interior and exterior cameras)
- Philips Hue (interior and exterior lights)
- WeMo Switches (most interior plugs, some exterior seasonal plugs like Christmas lights)
- Nest Thermostat and Smoke Detectors (temperature and safety)
- Lono (sprinkler control)
- GoGo Gate (garage doors)
In addition he plans a home security system for all doors and windows. “I plan to flush mount about 8 iPad mini retinas throughout the home and garages,” he said. Using an iPhone, you can control everything from anywhere since it is all connected to Revolv. Perhaps the best news is, the price of the technology is becoming more affordable. “Believe it or not, this is MUCH cheaper than it would cost a few years ago for a much more complex, lesser featured system.”
We think high tech homes are the future. Do you have plans to add any of these products or features to your new home?
